A typical Report from a damp proofing specialist may contain a statement to this effect:

"Meter readings taken from the walls indicated the presence of rising damp."

If you have a Report, Estimate or Quotation that makes this statement as the basis for offering to install a new damp proof course you have 'Won the Jackpot' and can claim your survey money back.

WHY

Because so-called 'Damp Meters' cannot measure damp in walls accurately and their readings alone cannot be used to confirm the presence of natural rising damp. Proof is readily available on both points.

OUTCOME

You can challenge the Damp Proofing Contractor and if you wish force the Company to withdraw their findings (which can be important if you are selling your property) demand a refund of any survey fees.

"The sample surface Meter readings taken from the ground floor walls indicated that further testing is essential to establish the cause and provide a diagnosis. Once I have the full picture I will be able to recommend repairs and we'll offer you a Quotation."

We have been long term members of the PCA - The Property Care Association - the professional body for the Damp Proofing industry and our two Dampness Surveyors have over 50 years of experience between them.

Sadly, we have now left the PCA because their surveying standards as taught are not being enforced and Reports are not being regularly assessed and random Site checked.

If you prefer to use a Contractor, rather than our free advice service, then go to the PCA Website where you can find the nearest qualified specialist companies.
